Beaches & Coast

Beach days, sea dips and clifftop paths in the area

From family-friendly beaches to hidden coves and breathtaking clifftop paths, this stretch of North Cornwall is made for exploring outdoors. Whether you’re sunbathing, rock pooling, surfing or simply strolling, you’ll find fresh sea air and wide-open views at every turn. Many of the best beaches are just minutes away, and the South West Coast Path offers something for all ages and abilities. It’s the perfect way to experience Cornwall’s natural beauty at your own pace.

While in town

Summerleaze and Crooklets beaches in Bude town

Right in the heart of Bude, these two beaches offer easy access and plenty to do. Summerleaze is great for families, with its tidal sea pool, level access and river for paddleboarding. Crooklets is a favourite for surfers and has excellent facilities. Both are lifeguarded in summer, dog-friendly in parts, and within walking distance of cafés, shops and the town centre.

For Surfers

Widemouth Bay for surf and sea views

Just a short drive from Bude, Widemouth Bay offers wide, open sands and consistent surf. It’s ideal for both beginners and seasoned surfers, and has surf schools on hand for lessons. There’s easy parking, a beach café and space to spread out, making it perfect for families or groups. The sunsets here are especially stunning — well worth staying late for.

Quieter beaches

Sandymouth and Northcott Mouth for space

If you’re after a quieter beach experience, these two National Trust beaches just north of Bude offer dramatic cliffs, rock pools, and a more rugged feel. Great for dog walking, picnics, and peaceful days by the sea, both require a short walk down but are well worth the effort. They feel wild and unspoilt, especially at low tide when the beach opens right up.

Local advice

Hidden coves and secret local favourites

Explore beyond the better-known spots and you’ll find tucked-away beaches like Duckpool and Millook — peaceful, scenic, and less crowded. These coves are often backed by dramatic cliffs or woodlands, with winding access routes that add to their charm. Best visited at low tide and with a picnic in hand, they’re perfect for those who enjoy a bit of discovery and don’t mind a more adventurous approach.

For walkers

The South West Coast Path highlights

This famous trail runs right past Bude, offering some of the most scenic walking in the country. Head north or south for coastal hikes with jaw-dropping sea views, wildflowers, and hidden beaches along the way. Walks can be short and gentle or more challenging depending on your pace, and you’ll often spot seabirds, seals or even dolphins from the clifftops.

Bringing the dog

Dog-friendly walks and year-round beaches

Many local beaches are dog-friendly, especially outside peak season, and there are plenty of coastal and countryside walks where your four-legged friend can roam free. Summerleaze has year-round access with restrictions, while Widemouth and Sandymouth welcome dogs at certain times. The coast path is ideal for walkies with a view — just bring water and a lead for the cliff sections.
